The Gear You Need To Get Started
There are many different types of massage tables, but when you’re starting out, a portable table is what you will want. The table illustrated above includes a face cradle, bolster, arm rest and traveling bag. I do recommend upgrading to the memory foam face rest. It is a small investment, but your clients will appreciate the extra comfort it will provide. I have been using the same one for years. It is definitely worth it! If you are interested in learning more about portable massage tables please check out my top 5 picks!
When it comes to massage sheets, I tend to stick to darker colors as they are more resilient to stains. I personally use only dark brown and my associate likes dark purple. White is nice, but they will get dingy fast
I also like the double holster apposed to a single holster. As you grow your practice, you will likely use a variety of creams, oils, and gels. Not all massage creams are created equal, check out my top picks heres
Massage Student Must Haves
I listed the above study matters for you to consider looking into because all massage therapy schools are not created equally as some of you will come to find out. I am currently mentoring a massage student who is having a hard time making it through his program because the school is not providing everything they should to help their students succeed.
If you run into this problem, please do not get discouraged there are so many resources available to you that if you put yourself out there and look, you will find the help you need.
Side note, I am a true massage nerd and the anatomy coloring book is really fun and educational at the same time. When I had my anatomy coloring book I would include the directions of the muscles fibers and I found that really helpful with my massages.
I also use my muscle chart to this day when I am educating my clients. Having visual aids really help clients who have no clue about anatomy or how the body works. So the muscle charts will help in school and when you get out. I’ve been using the same chart for 14 years, money well spent.
Student working on a budget
When starting your massage therapy program the school will provide you with your books, that’s it. Some schools will include scrubs but some do not. If you need to keep things on the cheap I suggest:

Free MBLEx Practice Exams
At the end of the day if you want to become a massage therapist it comes down to passing the MBLEx exam. If you can not pass the MBLEx you can’t get your license and you can’t pursue your dreams of becoming a certified massage therapist.
The MBLEx exam can be intimidating but it is not impossible. I have a learning disability and terrible test anxiety so when it was time for me to take my test, I was a mess. I am embarrassed to say but it took me several times to pass my exam.
14 years ago there were not may resources available like there are today. There are several sites you can gain free access to practice test questions and study guides. My suggestion to you is take as many practice tests as possible, this will eliminate any test anxiety you may have leading up to your exam.
Check out this great practice exam!
